Volunteer as a Mentor

Thank you for your interest in being an OMEGA mentor. A mentor commits to having one-on-one meetings with a skilled immigrant mentee over a four-month period (16 hours over 16 weeks).  During this time the mentor helps him/her to navigate the job search process by sharing their knowledge and experience of their industry and the Kiwi work culture. In doing this, there is no pressure or expectation on the mentor of having to find a job for the mentee. OMEGA provides orientation and ongoing coaching support for all mentors, as well as a closing feedback session.

Typically, a mentor helps the mentee:

  • Identify skills required by market demands;
  • Align CV content to sector requirements;
  • Proceed with accreditation or skills upgrading;
  • Gather information on local industries and employers;
  • Prepare for the interview process;
  • Identify and seize employment or job training opportunities; and
  • Build a professional network.

Mentors benefit from the Mentoring Programme through learning to develop their coaching, communication and leadership skills. They expand their capability to work with people from different backgrounds and cultures; motivate and support others to reach their potential; and become more aware of the job market and industry trends.  Since mentoring can be a two-way experience, additionally mentors can gain access to international markets and further learn international methodologies relating to their industry. And of course last but not least, is the feel-good factor of helping someone out.
